Handler card or Manager certification — which do you need?
The food handler card is the basic credential for anyone who touches food, utensils, or food-contact surfaces: line cooks, prep staff, servers, bussers, dishwashers, baristas, food truck crew, grocery deli and bakery staff. The Food Protection Manager certification is the supervisor-level credential health inspectors ask for by name, and usually only one person on site needs it.
If your manager told you to "get your food handler card before your first shift," this is the one.
What the training covers
- Personal hygiene and handwashing
- Time and temperature control for safe food
- Preventing cross-contamination and allergen mistakes
- Cleaning and sanitizing work surfaces and equipment
- Safe receiving, storage, and holding
- Recognizing and reporting foodborne illness symptoms
Certifying a whole crew
We handle group enrollment for restaurants, food trucks, catering companies, and multi-location operators — one invoice, one contact, and a roster of who has passed. See group certification or ask in the form below.
Training and exams are delivered through Always Food Safe, an ANAB-accredited provider. Acceptance is determined by your state and local health authority.
