What the rule in Virginia says
Virginia does not issue a statewide food handler card. Its Food Regulations (12VAC5-421) require food employees to be knowledgeable about food safety and make the person in charge responsible for making sure they are. A documented food handler certificate is the simplest way to show an inspector, a franchisor or your insurer that the training happened. A handful of localities and many employers require it outright.
